1. Configuration - Energy Storage Options

   The candidate Energy Storage Options chosen predetermines the end market served. For instance, the energy storage medium exhibiting the highest energy density presently is Anhydrous Ammonia. The NH3 molecule contains three hydrogen atoms for every Nitrogen atom, 17.65%wt(H2) and remains a liquid under moderate pressure, ~200 psi. The many advantages of Anhydrous Ammonia have been documented here, here, and here. Thus choosing Solid State Ammonia Synthesis as the energy storage mechanism implies meeting the needs of both the fertilizer and nascent liquid fuels markets.

   Therefore, energy storage system costs, round trip storage efficiencies, robustness to high G force environments, and energy densities will be considered for each of the aforementioned energy storage technologies as applied to each market segment per each geographic location suited to each particular mobile hybrid structure configuration. The complete evaluation necessarily includes the TRL and development timelines for the various conversion technologies needed for these storage technologies.

   We will base break-even analysis for various configurations primarily on delivery of kWh of electricity, kg-H2, or Metric Tonnes of Ammonia.

2. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Development

   Development of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system requires several diverse on-line integrated server-side applications, and client side user interfaces to access them. Remote control system development, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) database development integrates:

  1. Weather prediction and tracking data aggregation - Geospatial Information System (GIS) development, Data from a number of satellites and map servers on one server, opensource Geoserver, client-side Geographic Resource Assessment System Software, GRASS GIS etc.
  2. Commodity price and currency exchange rate database development for Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) Assessment;
  3. System Configuration Module Database development comprising patented mobile structures and other hardware specifications, datasheets, bill-of-material (BOM) costs, material safety data sheets (MSDS); This database may also contain Customer Relation Management (CRM) and Supply Chain Management data.
  4. Unmanned Marine Vehicle (UMV) control with the ultimate goal of high-level autonomy. The UMV control development will require an emulation platform of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to simulate the vessel navigation, propulsion, and operation local control systems.
  5. Vessel Velocity Performance Prediction (VPP): from a knowledge base of those who have designed sailboats and propelled vessels, adapt VPP's to enable the user to predict energy recovery by vessels specified in the configuration database (3). ANSYS and/or Solidworks Premium and Solidworks Flow for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) dynamic simulations, Solidworks and especially ANSYS Fluid Dynamics both being de facto standards in mechanical design and CFD; Hire a full time structural or mechanical engineer to design, model and simulate candidate configurations.
  6. Path cost or path yield analysis algorithm development. For instance U.S. National Renewable Energy Lab's (NREL's) "Homer" adapted especially for automated analysis of hybrid mobile ocean energy systems while also providing the mapping capabilities of ECDIS. The top-level integration of this data in parts (1) through (5) endows operators with the mathematical rigor to make prudent decisions on configuration, M&O, and navigation.

    For time-to-market considerations, we will evaluate in-house open source development compared to licensing and integrating the various components from outside sources, as described in the following sections.

3. Geographical Information System (GIS) Development

   One of the diverse server-side applications includes Geographical Information System (GIS) Development. An advisor to the Integrated Power Technology Corporation™ and co-inventor of the SCADA patent is a respected authority in the field of Geographic Information Systems and contributed to several Integrated Power Technology Corporation™ grant proposals. This section, Geographical Information System (GIS) Development as above, will explore the most advanced companies in the field as potential strategic partners, as well as survey some research to establish an expected development timeline. 4. Unmanned Marine Vehicles (UMV) Development

   Another one of the diverse server-side applications includes remote control of the UMV. Many researchers have contributed to the field of Remote Control for one or a fleet of unmanned vehicles as a large body of research exists accessible on-line. As a number of companies manufacture and operate UMV's for a variety of purposes, most for ocean metrology, and offshore fossil fuel applications, this section, Unmanned Marine Vehicles (UMV) Development will explore the most advanced companies in the field as potential strategic partners, as well as survey some research to establish an expected development timeline and a cost effective academic, open source, or non-profit research institute licensing strategy along with corporate potential strategic partners.

5. Velocity Performance Prediction (VPP) Development

Some researchers originally developed VPP for yacht racing, including one, AeroHydro, Inc., that contributed to the Integrated Power Technology Corporation™'s DoE SBIR Grant Proposal : DE-PS02-06ER06-30 Topic: 4. Wind Energy Reliability and Cost Reduction; Subtopic: a. Smart Wind Grid Integration Systems, entitled: Design of Turbine-Integrated Hydrofoil.
